Welcome to the Dulcimer Crossing. Our vision is to teach online dulcimer lessons to people who are unable to get to workshops because of their jobs, and to those who don't have a teacher nearby. Everyone should be able to enjoy lessons at their own pace, within their personal time frame, and in the comfort of their homes. We are beginning with hammered dulcimer lessons, but will later add mountain dulcimer lessons as well.
It all began about 15 years ago, in the piney woods of East Texas, in Crockett, where we owned a restaurant called the Wooden Nickel. One Sunday afternoon, Jerry and Margaret Wright stopped by with their sons, bringing in instruments we had never seen before. Their impromptu dulcimer concert changed our lives. We fell in love with the unique sound of the instrument.
Soon after, we found ourselves in Spring, Texas, at the home of Chuck and Peggy Carter, buying our first dulcimers. I bought a Rick Thum 16/16 hammered dulcimer, and Mike was drawn to an hourglass Tom Fellenbaum mountain dulcimer. We happily drove back home with our new treasures and started to practice.
Then we hosted the Davy Crockett Dulcimer Society at the Wooden Nickel every 4th Saturday, starting with mountain dulcimer lessons in the afternoon followed by a jam session after dinner. Often there was standing room only. Eventually, the Wooden Nickel was sold, and the jam sessions have moved to Camp Street Cafe, in Crockett, Texas, on the first Saturday of each
month.
